Broken SOG Machette

This is kinda old news, but then again its been months since I last blogged. Anyway…

On my last search and rescue outing, my sog sword met its match. Admittedly its was kinda my fault. I was standing there looking at this 1.5″ tree thinking, “I wonder if I could take this down in one hit.” Answer: No. I swung and was left holding a stump. The other two pieces were laying on the ground, right on top of each other at the base of the tree.

I have since replaced it with a Kabar Kukri. However i have not had much time to play with my know hacking implement. So far I can say it does not eat random blackberry vines as well, but it flies through anything remotely rigid.

Blackhawk Speed Clips

BlackHawk Speed Clips attaching a Mil-Spec Monkey Combat Admin Pouch to a Camelbak Vest

My Search and Rescue kit is an elaborate mess of zipties, nylon, carabiners and molle.

Molle is great as a customizable system but lacks the ability to quickly drop pouches. Which is important. For example: I have a butt pack on my vest that contains spare clothes and other bits of gear that would be needed for an overnight mission. Now If I know that I will not be in the field that long, I drop that pouch. With traditional molle, dropping the pack would be a short job, putting it back on a major pain.

New Blackhawk Speedclips

Enter Blackhawk speed clips. These things make attaching and removing molle packs and pouches a snap. Here is how I think they stack up against compete molle systems:

  1. BlackHawk Speed Clips: By far the best. Buy them and never look back
  2. 5.11: Most molle 5.11 gear comes with their molle attachment system built in. Its pretty good. Good enough that I would not replace it. And just fine if you are not going to be doing a lot of reconfiguring.
  3. Maxpidition Tac-ties: Junk. They work ok, but its way over complicating the whole process. plus they never take all of the slack out of the system, leaving a minor bit of space between the pouch and the vest.
  4. Maxpidition Tac-Ties attaching a Mil-Spec Monkey Combat Admin Pouch to a CamelBak Vest
Note: the general messiness compared to the image up top of the BlackHawk speed clips in action.

  5. Condor Things: Condor gear is questionable to begin with. Its molle attachment system is just lame. If you have to use condor gear, cut those nylon strip off and use the BlackHawk Speed clips.

Anyway, there is my thought for the day.

Reload Button

January 5th, 2011

Once again LA Police Gear and UPS are going to hate me. I ordered a few bits of Search and Rescue gear. Even though pushing reload constantly does not actually speed up the UPS truck, it makes me feel better. :)

Anyway, picked up a sweet Gerber survival knife and the new 200 Lumen SureFire. Can’t wait to try out both.

American Bushman posted a great youtube of REI Storm Proof Matches:

Anyway I carry them in my SAR gear. I love them.

Molle Attachment Systems: Blackhawk Speed Clips v Maxpedition Tac-Ties

October 4th, 2010

Generally, the molle gear that I have purchased have come with sewn on nylon runners. These work with various degrees of success. The condor versions kinda suck. The 5.11 version works pretty well. Then there is Maxpedition pouches that do not come with the runners you need to make the attachment. This means you need to find something else. So far I have tried two different systems and I can say the Blackhawk Speed Clips beat everything hands down.

To be honest I did not have the correct size Maxpedition tac-tie. I had 3″ and I needed 5″. It worked out though. They securely attached my Maxpedition MilSpec Monkey Combat Admin Pouch (Amazon) to my vest. I had to use three (again because of my error), two on the top sides and on in the bottom middle. Now with no directions on exactly how to use these I was on my own. The best way I can describe how I used them was weaving them though the molle in one direction and then weaving it back to it would buckle.

The Blackhawk Speed Clips (Amazon) on the other had work intuitively without any explanation. And because they are ridged, they are really easy to weave. Plus is just seems like the weave is tighter and neater.

SOG Machete

August 16th, 2010

Its around $20 and makes a great sound as it blows though blackberries. What else do you want?

Downside: its got a saw thing which I think will be useless.

Eventually I would like to get one with a curve as to ass more weight toward the tip.

SAR Kit – Gear of the Search: Leather Gloves

August 9th, 2010

In my last very brief post I mentioned I went on my first search. I had a couple of items that worked really well, my Brunton Sighting Compass (54LU), Danner boots, 5.11 Tactical Pants and my SOG Machete. But at the end of the day the best thing I had on me was my leather gloves. Seriously, just plain old leather gloves. Without gloves you may ask ourself, “do I really want to grab that?” or “do I really want to jump into those blackberries?” Thick gloves removes all that.

I have some Blackhawk aviators on order from lapolicegear.com but its hard to imagine them being that much better than these cheap ass gardening gloves.
