On Prepping

I was just reading this Reuters articleand thinking about what I have done.

On the face of it I might fit into the wack-job camp of people expecting the end of the world. After all my wife and I both have bail out bags that might scare the sheeple.

But my kit is not a scary static thing that sits waiting for the end of times. Its actually really useful day to day. I have tape, paracord, work gloves, water, maps and a bunch of other stuff that comes in really handy when something inconvenient happens. For my wife, I know that if she got stuck traveling somewhere she would have enough food/water to last two days. Combined with knowing how tough she is, I don’t worry.

That, for me, is where the real world meets the paranoia. I am ready for whatever life dishes out. Car problems, surprise snow storm, being the first person with first aid training and supplies when someone needs help, whatever. Its piece of mind knowing that I can easily handle anything.

Its worth noting that my bail out bag is essentially a copy of my Search and Rescue kit. I could probably do a mild to moderate SAR mission out of this pack.

Sugru Xbox Controller Mod

This mod was more about me looking for something to hack using sugru than actually trying to improve the xbox controller. Needless to say, I think I did improve the controller.

Here are the results:

Basically I used the sugru to make myself custom nubs that give my middle fingers a lot more traction. When I am several hours into pwning n00bs my hands get a little clammy. These nubs will give me something solid to hang onto. Maybe its because Microsoft figures the Xbox is mostly played my 12 yr olds, but I have always thought the controller was a little small. The sugru nubs help there as well as I pushed some under my ring fingers.

For those really confused about what sugru is… Sugru is like silicone playdough that dries into a soft-tough silicone. Also it adhears to just about anything (or so they claim). I am actually testing that claim because I did not clean the xbox controller before applying the sugru, so it had a light coating of hand oil.

- Critical Public Safety (Police, Fire, Military)
- Public Education
- Some Public Infrastructure
- SPACE!!!!!!!

Because their usually isn’t an immediate profit motive to boldly going where no man has gone before.

Apple, Microsoft and … Magpul

Today The Firearm Blog posted a blog about how the 40 round Pmag was gone from the Magpul 2011 catalog, without ever hitting the market. Magpul’s… interesting… product release cycles got me thinking about some giants that have very different approaches to product announcements.

In the gun world, Magpul very much reminds me of Apple. It seems that there are always high demand for Magpul’s products. Furthermore people get very excited when a new product or a new generation is announced. However Magpul seems to be more like Microsoft about announcing products.

For those who don’t know Microsoft will do keynotes or press events where they will show off a bunch of new tech. However Microsoft has been really bad about bringing that tech to market. So watching a Microsoft keynote is a lot like reading Popular Science, the tech is 5-100 years away from the consumer market.

Apple on the other hand only previews tech that is about to be released. So when Apple shows you something really really cool, Apple follows it up with, “and you can buy it on X date in our stores or web site.”

Now you many not be able to get your hands on one for months, as was my experience with my iPad 2 but they are out there and can be purchased.

So back to Magpul. Magpul will go to Shot Show with a TON of great ideas (iPhone case, for example). These ideas will circulate the blogoshere and I will get my credit card ready. When it pops up on MidwayUSA as “coming soon” I will place an order. Then I wait for 9 months. By which time I loose interest and cancel my order.

An example from this weekend: being the Magpul fanboy I am, I wanted their MS3 sling. Well that sling is nowhere to be found. It is completely MIA. So I ended up buying a 5.11 sling.

The danger for Magpul here is vaperware. If to many people realize that Magpul is just brainstorming and not actually bringing these great ideas to market, they will stop getting excited. So my advice to Magpul is, be like Apple. Announce a product when you are ready to sell it. Until then keep your lips sealed.
