Surefire Standard Lamp vs LED / Aluminum vs Nitrolon

September 29th, 2009

I have now purchased three Surefire flashlights. First I purchased a Surefire 6P LED for myself, mostly to see what all the hype was about. Because my wife kept stealing my 6P, I bought her a Surefire G2 LED. Then last week for my buddies birthday I got him a Surefire G2 Nitrolon.

While I am to some extent spreading the Surefire love, there is also a method to my madness. Basically buying Surefire’s for my friends gives me a great excuse to play with them myself.

Scales Lie, Use a Body Fat Monitor

Omeron Fat Loss Monitor Review

I often tell people that endless hours of cardio is not the optimal, long term, way to loose fat. I usually suggest a very healthy amount of weight lifting (even for women). This is because weight lifting damages the muscles, prolonging the calorie burn as they are repaired. Additionally someone who is packing muscle will have a significantly higher resting metabolic rate. Here is the catch, as you pack on the muscle, you may find yourself getting heavier and not lighter. So how to you track your progress? Remember, you can’t improve what you can’t measure.

SureFire V25 Holster

July 6th, 2009

front of SureFire V25 Holster

This was totally a weekend impulse buy with shaky justification.

I have been looking at the pyrex lens on my SureFire 6P and really hoping that I don’t one day scratch it. Not that a scratch our reduce its performance in any meaningful way. Additionally, Its not the sort of thing that really comfortable in your pocket.

iPhone 3G S Review

July 6th, 2009

A few weeks ago I posted about ordering the iPhone 3G S. Now that I have had some time playing with it I can give a bit of a review.

iPhone 3G S First Impressions
The first thing you notice, at least when upgrading, is a significant increase in speed. It seems like load times are significantly reduced. The iPhone does not multi-task, meaning it does not run multiple apps at the same time. On the S model switching apps feels like switching apps where on the original 3G it feels like closing one and opening another.

Hot Weather + Outdoors + Water = Amphibious Adventure

oneonta gorge

A few years back a co-worker introduced me to a very short but very entertaining hike in the Columbia River Gorge. Oneonta Gorge is one trail head past the famous Multnomah falls. Even going slow this hike is no longer than 1 hour. So why bother? It starts with a quick scramble over a 10 foot log dam. To get to the end of the gorge and the waterfall you have to wade though chest deep water (which happens to be snow melt, do the math). Needless to say it’s thrilling. The water is brisk and when you get to the fall, it feels as if you can’t take a full breath due to the rushing water in the confined space. Somewhat like sticking your head out a car window moving at sixty.

ShurShot Stock Part 2: Firing

May 21st, 2009

In part 1, I introduced the Remington ShurShot Stock. This stock is a combination pistol grip and thumb-though, although most people would just classify it as a pistol grip. The installation of the Remington ShurShot Stock is easy and it makes the gun feel great.

Field Testing:

Last weekend I headed up to Lartch Mountain to shoot some clay with a friend. I like this scenario because its out in the woods, to you get a feel for the handling the firing in less than idea environments plus it gives you the opportunity to go though a lot of rounds. It also does not hurt that the views at Lartch are amazing.

Oakley Obsession

May 13th, 2009

You might say that I know a thing or two about glasses. Not because I am any sort of eye care professional but because I have been wearing them from the age of 3. Around high school age I decided that my glasses were not that cool and I needed to get contacts. Contact lenses opened up the world of sunglasses. Furthermore still suffering for poor eyesight, the pain caused by debris in my lenses and enjoying an active lifestyle, I have really out my shades to the test.

I have tried many different brands and heard many different opinions but I keep coming back to Oakley. This weekend I purchased my third pair of Oakley wire frames. The first two were both killed in the line of duty after many years of honorable service.

Putting Surefire Flashlights to the Test

May 7th, 2009

For a longtime I have been skeptical about Surefire’s claims of general awesomeness. I have checked them out at Sportsman’s Warehouse and was generally not impressed. My feeling was; why buy a flashlight when my Petzl Myo XP headlamp (topic for another post) was just as good, if not better. As much as I tried my inner gear geek could not resist. So when I spotted one at the GI Joe’s going out of business sale I had to buy it.

I purchased the SureFire 6P LED (6P at REI). Normally its around $80 but because of the sale I got it for about $60. Generally Surefires, like many other name brands, don’t go on sale (sign of the times I guess). To do some comparison, I put fresh batteries in my Petzl Myo XP headlamp and headed outside with a camera. It is hard to get accurate representations of what you actually see when using a camera in the dark. But in comparison you can definitely tell the difference.
