Repetition and frequent refreshers of basic skills is important. That is why I signed up for REI’s basic GPS class. Sure I have been using GPS for years. But can I do it while I have much bigger problems to deal with?

GPS Skills
May 27th, 2010Since I am in the market…
May 27th, 2010I was reading Cheaper Than Dirt’s post on entry level bolt guns. I will probably end up buying a Remington 700 in stainless. However I did look at the 770. And what a piece of crap. I felt like I had to jiggle the bolt to get it to return. Not smooth like the ss 700. Here is SW Washington/Portland OR, the 770 is going for around $450-$500, the ss 700 is around $630. From what I have observed in extra $1xx is totally worth it.
Its actually kinda comical, all the local gun shops and sporting good stores either don’t carry the 770 or openly talk about its turd-like qualities.
Swamp Rat Knifes
May 25th, 2010This weekend at the WASARCONF I was introduced to Swamp Rat knifes. I watch three guys break down a tree with what could only be described at bowie knives on steroids. Prepare for sticker shock. They guys with these things say they run about $400 a knife. They also say that Ka-bars last about 5 min before they snap in half.
Check out this youtube. I probably would not have believed it if I had not watched this kind of thing in person (although the guys I was watching were using much shorter versions).

Magpul iPhone Case Delayed
May 20th, 2010After wondering what was going on with MidwayUSA’s ever increasing backorder date for the Magpul iPhone Case, it seems that Magpul has given an answer. They posted this on their site:
IPHONE CASE RELEASE DELAYED
As some of you know, Magpul announced the iPhone Field Case last January at the 2010 SHOT Show, with a product release scheduled for late February. Unfortunately, the current Field Case fit and finish are not representative of the quality and value that customers have come to expect from Magpul equipment. As a result, Magpul has chosen to delay its release in order to address these issues.Ever since the company was founded in 1999, speed and efficiency in product development have been top priorities, but they will always remain secondary to the quality and performance for which Magpul is known. Delays such as these are understandably frustrating, but are sometimes necessary to avoid betraying the brand, and more importantly, the customers’ trust in Magpul products. More information and release dates will be posted as they become available.
Designed by Magpul in Colorado. Made in Colorado.
Well now we know. Hopefully they will get this all worked out in the near future. I am really looking forward to getting my Magpul iPhone Case. As of right now Midway is saying it will be 6/14/2010 before the iPhone case starts shipping.
LINK BAIT! Tactical Pants Guide
May 18th, 2010Jeanette asked me to link to her… I mean TacticalPants.com… I mean cat5.com‘s… guide to tactical pants.
It seems that Cat5 has a ton of storefronts and corresponding blogs. What is wrong with this? Nothing. In fact its an impressive bit of SEO.
In my non-scientific sample, tacticalpants.com ranks really well for all tactical pants related terms. Only coming in second to 5.11 for the term “tactical pants”. But have no fear, they rank 1 in the ppc listings for that term.
Link bait accomplished! After all you got a link from Uncle. Nice work Cat 5… urr TacticalPants.com… urr Janette.
Ok, now who here can say “tactical pants” with a straight face? And for the record I love my 5.11s.
As I was saying…
May 18th, 2010Elk n00b
May 18th, 2010I have been invited to go elk hunting with a friend of mine. This means that I have a lot of gear to acquire. Foremost on the list is a suitable elk gun.
I have been thinking 30-06, but I am open to other calibers. Also I hear great things about the Remington 700. When I went out and played with these guns this weekend, the 700 in stainless was by far my favorite. I would go with the standard blued but it seemed to me that the stainless’s action was smoother. Maybe that was a individual gun thing?
I also liked the TC Venture (but not as much as the 700). I played with some Savages but was not so impressed.
Anyway what do you think?
